Celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month with art and comedy at Shoes Off, Please

Shoes Off, Please spotlights local AAPI artists and comics and is supported by the Jersey City Arts & Culture Trust Fund. 

Proceeds from the show will be donated to AAPI Montclair to help create a more inclusive community by uplifting the varied experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, advocating for AAPI rights and representation, and promoting awareness and education around AAPI culture and history.

ABOUT:
Jesumar Legada’s work begins with mixed media. As it offers the most versatile way of expressing the environment. As a graduate of the fine arts at SVA, art has always been the means to understanding the world. The motivation to create is a passion not just in the making of art but to experience it in its pure form. Joshua Lay
is a stand-up comedian and writer. He is an Oklahoma native, New Jersey transplant that entertains audiences with his introspective humor and musings on life. He performed in the Jersey City Comedy Festival, the NY Comedy Mob Festival, and the Blue Whale Comedy Festival. You can see him perform regularly in the tri-state area.

Art Cai is an Asian-American stand-up comedian who hails from Nebraska and is now based in Brooklyn. He is the host of the OFF MENU comedy show in the Lower East Side, NYC, and the BLUNDER BUS podcast with fellow comedian Vic Van Tran. He's performed for Buzzfeed, Vox, all around NYC (including: New York Comedy Festival @ Caroline's, Asian Comedy Festival and Diverse AF Festival), and once in Thailand.

Andrea Wang
is a Brooklyn, NY-based comedian who produces/hosts Lychee Martini, a monthly comedy variety show showcasing Asian female talent. She’s performed in the Asian Comedy Fest and her work has been featured by NowThis. Outside of comedy, she is a graphic designer and font enthusiast.

Jason Choi
is a New York-based comedian, writer, and actor who has been featured in the New York Comedy Festival and Timeout New York. He was a finalist at the Boston Comedy Festival and the New York Comedy Club Fall Invitational, and winner of the 2019 Comedy Mob Festival. He’s also appeared at the Asian Comedy Festival, Tiny Cupboard Festival, and will appear at SF Sketchfest 2023. Jason has opened for Ronny Chieng at New York’s Town Hall. You can catch him performing regularly at New York Comedy Club and Stand Up NY. He’s also the ‘Angry Sony Fanboy,’ a minor internet meme of 2006.

Humzah Choudry is a Pakistani American comedian from Oklahoma City. He is a radio host on Radio Free Brooklyn and has featured at Blue Whale Comedy Festival. His comedy strikes a balance between both worlds bringing a fresh viewpoint to the comedy scene.

Brittany Carney
began standup comedy in Washington, DC. She now lives in New York, where she performs at the Comedy Cellar, Union Hall, and other clubs/alternative venues around the city. She has recently headlined venues including Vermont Comedy Club, Helium Comedy Club Philadelphia, Philly Punchline, Bottlerocket Pittsburgh, and LA’s Elysian Theater. In 2022, Vulture Magazine listed Brittany as a Comedian You Should and Will Know. Brittany regularly opens for Gary Gulman, Stavros Halkias, Moshe Kasher, and Todd Barry. Brittany’s staff writing experience includes Season 2 of That Damn Michael Che on HBO Max, Season 2 of Teenage Euthenasia on Adult Swim, and Networking for Introverts on Audible. Her Comedy Central: Featuring set aired in February 2021 and is available here. Her Don’t Tell set, filmed August 2023, is available here.
