When filmmaker George Romero and crew descended on a rural Pittsburgh farmhouse to shoot Night of the Living Dead, they created an iconic horror film that offers more than shocks and scares. The story of a group of strangers fending off a zombie plague was a financial triumph, grossing more than 250 times its meager $114,000 budget. It also achieved artistic success with 96 minutes of beautiful, shadow-draped chiaroscuro imagery. The politics of the time intrude on the frame as well as the filmmakers subtly denounce the Vietnam War by showcasing guts and gore in the gritty, black and white, handheld camera of a wartime newsreel. By spawning a zombie subgenre that’s continued to remain popular after five decades, Romero took his rightful place in the pantheon of Horror Royalty with his first film.
