ABOUT SUMIT ROY
Sumit Roy, a Kolkata-based singer, composer, mentor, and revered guru, has been a luminous presence in the music world for over five decades. Equally at ease with Western and Eastern traditions, he blends classical rigor with contemporary flair, creating performances that are both foot-tapping and high-energy. Fans and critics alike have dubbed Sumit Roy the “Calypso King” and the “Nat King Cole of Kolkata” for good reason. His body of work spans original albums, film scores, television series, and documentaries, alongside acclaimed stage shows across India and abroad. Rooted in a family of musicians and artists, Sumit carries forward a rich legacy while nurturing the next generation—both through his mentorship of young performers and by inspiring his own children to embrace the arts.
Building on this legacy, Sumit’s credits include composing the score for the much-loved television series “Kolkata Kolkata,” as well as for the off-Broadway production “Ramaavan-A Musical” along with music for feature films and documentaries, title themes for national TV serials, and a catalog of original albums spanning modern Bengali songs, devotional works, and cross-cultural fusion. On stage, he has served as music director and lead vocalist for large-format concerts in India and abroad, and he continues to mentor emerging singers through workshops and one-on-one guidance.
