HOT WINTER follows five humans as they struggle to understand one another, unifying in difference and falling apart in sameness. The performers occupy a world between the real and unreal, moving through confusion, violence, and shifting gravities to find communication through touch and mutually decided blindness. HOT WINTER is a surrealistic look at the performers’ collective universe, each of their own worlds vibrating alone within it.

Performance Dates:

Friday, September 21st at 8pm
Saturday, September 22nd at 8pm
Sunday, September 23rd at 5pm

BIRDHOUSE is a collaborative New York City based artist collective founded in 2018 by director Raven Taisce White. BIRDHOUSE creates intensely physical performance and installation works that confront cultural ideas of humanity, love, violence, and community. Through a studio practice of unknowing, relearning, and unknowing again, the artists strive to find honesty in their work and power in their relationships. The BIRDHOUSE community is currently made up of Tiffany Ogburn, Clark Griffin, Raven White, Maximillion Canion, Sebastian Abarbanell, Sienna Blaw, and Bryn Hlava. Artists on hiatus: Emily Wohl and Mitchell Christie.
Raven Taisce White is a trans woman from South Carolina. She has found art as her way of taking power from her experiences while helping others see humanity in a new light. She graduated from Princeton University in 2016 with a degree in visual art and choreography, before moving to Berlin for a three month study in improvisational practices. There, she was introduced to the philosophy of “unknowing” by Sonja Pregrad — a mental practice of letting go through acceptance that is now the core of Raven’s creative process. In 2018, she founded BIRDHOUSE, a New York City based artist collective. BIRDHOUSE presented their first full-length production, HOT WINTER, at TheaterLab NYC in March 2018. Raven is mentored by choreographer and Princeton dance director Susan Marshall, who invited her to choreograph a duet for her show Prototypes, presented at La Mama in July 2018. The duet was met with critical praise. Raven is currently directing The Open Window, a new BIRDHOUSE work for TheaterLab, and will be directing TheaterLab’s Mothers/Myths/Monsters, an all fem-identified production for 2019.
